Christening outfits in South Africa: what to dress your child in

By the Giovelle team · 26 September 2026

A christening is one of the few occasions where tradition still shapes what a child wears, and one where most of us have no idea what the rules are. Most parents change their minds about the outfit more times than they would like to admit.

The short answer about christening outfits in South Africa is that there are very few rules. White or ivory is traditional but not required. A gown is lovely but nobody expects one. Your child's comfort through a long service matters far more than either.

Babies: gown, romper or dress

The traditional christening gown is long, white and often passed down through a family. If you have one, use it. If not, there are three good options.

A christening gown or long dress in cotton or cotton lawn, usually with a bonnet or headband. This is the classic look, and it photographs beautifully, especially on a baby under six months who will be carried throughout.

For a baby boy, a romper or two piece set in ivory, stone, sage or soft blue. A collared romper with short sleeves suits a summer christening; a long sleeved set with a soft knit cardigan suits winter.

For a baby girl who is already crawling or walking, a simple dress with a full skirt. Long gowns and mobile babies do not mix.

Whatever you choose, the fabric against the skin should be cotton. Churches are often cool and services are long, and a baby who is too hot or scratchy will let the whole congregation know.

Toddlers and older children

For a girl between one and six, a knee length dress in cotton, broderie anglaise or smocked cotton is the usual choice. Ivory, white and very pale pastels are traditional. Dusty pink, sage and taupe are increasingly common and photograph well. A cardigan for the church, and a hair ribbon rather than a large headpiece. Toddlers pull headpieces off, usually during the quietest prayer.

For a boy, a shirt and shorts set, or a shirt with tailored trousers, in light neutrals. A linen or cotton shirt with a Peter Pan or point collar, worn with shorts in stone or olive, is smart without being stiff. We'd avoid full suits on small boys unless the family specifically wants that look. They're hot, and most boys hate them.

Fabric for a hot church, or a cold one

In our experience most christenings are in the morning, and many are in summer. Cotton lawn, broderie anglaise, linen and lightweight cotton poplin are the fabrics to look for. Satin and polyester show sweat and creases, and they feel horrible in the heat. For a winter christening, a cotton dress or set with a fine knit cardigan is warmer and more comfortable than a heavy synthetic fabric. A Highveld church in July is properly cold.

Getting the size right

Baby sizes in South Africa are usually given in months (0 to 3, 3 to 6, 6 to 12, 12 to 18, 18 to 24). Sizes vary a lot between brands, so go by your baby's measurements rather than the age on the label, and ask us on WhatsApp if you are between sizes. If the christening is more than a month away, buy the size the baby will be on the day, not the size they are now. Babies under a year can grow a full size in six weeks, usually right after you've bought something lovely.

What to pack for the day

A spare outfit, because babies. Bibs for the reception, a muslin cloth to protect the outfit during feeds, and something warm for the church. Dress the baby at the last possible moment, after the feed, and keep the good outfit in a garment bag until then. More than one baby has been dressed on the back seat in the church car park.

Godparents and guests

Guests dress as they would for a smart daytime occasion. Godparents often coordinate loosely with the family, in soft neutrals for example, but there's no rule. Leave the black in the cupboard, though. A christening isn't the moment for it.

What we make for christenings

Our baby occasion collection covers christenings, naming ceremonies and first birthdays: cotton rompers and sets for boys, and dresses and hand smocked pieces for girls, made in natural fabrics. The Taupe Rose Hand-Smocked Dress and the Meadow in Moonlight Dress are two of our favourite christening choices for girls. For boys, The Elian Stripe Set and The Vale Set work from a few months old up to toddler size.

Frequently asked questions

Does a christening outfit have to be white?
No. White and ivory are traditional and still the most common choice, but soft pastels and neutrals are completely appropriate. Ask the church if they have a preference. Most don't.
What do boys wear to a christening in South Africa?
For babies, a romper or a shirt and shorts set. For older boys, a shirt with shorts or trousers. Keep the colours light and neutral. Nobody expects a full suit.
What do you wear to a christening as a guest?
Smart daytime clothes: dresses, skirts or tailored trousers for women, and chinos with a shirt or a jacket for men. Avoid black, and avoid anything you'd wear to a nightclub.
Can I use the outfit again?
A simple cotton dress or romper can be worn to a wedding, a first birthday or family photographs. A long gown is harder to rewear, which is why many families keep theirs as an heirloom instead.
